February 14, 2020, the day I write these lines, is the date of the official release of Dan Loomis's Job’s Trials album. I will not give lavish praise in advance, calling this album exceptiona, landmark, and so on - the future will show. But the fact that this is a rare triumph for jazz - a unique work is indisputable. The bassist living in New York, composer and scriptwriter (yes, it’s appropriate to talk about the script in this project) Dan Loomis worked on this project for many years. On its cover, next to the name, there is a modest explanation: "A Jazz Song Cycle." Probably, another term is more appropriate here, arousing several great ghosts at once: "Jazz oratorio". And in this connection I recall two names: Handel and Ellington. Georg Friedrich Handel was the author of oratorios on biblical stories, unsurpassed in academic music. Concerts of sacred Christian music, the great jazz band leader and composer Duke Ellington considered the most important part of his own work. In the footsteps of both giants, Loomis went, creating an album based on one of the most difficult biblical texts - the “Book of Job” from the Old Testament.
The album includes fourteen tracks. Half of them, including the opening introduction of "Our narrator, Ha Satan, Proposes a Bet", are commentary from a mysterious character in the Book of Job called Satan or, literally, The Adversary. Loomis entrusted his role to the Broadway theater actor Daniel Breaker after each commentary followed by a musical composition reflecting a particular episode of the Book of Job, all composed by Loomis himself, and only the final composition of Dear Lord is Coltrane’s famous creation The instrumental group involved in the project is small: it’s Loomis himself, guitarist Jeff Miles and longtime Eastman School of Music practitioner Loomis drummer Jared Shonig, with whom they often collaborate for the past seventeen years.With the support of this group, two singers of Korean descent embody the project Yoon Sung Choi and Sung Yi Jung: I think the emotional impact on the Job's Trials listener is largely due to the successful choice of vocalists. Both are very expressive and spectacular, without violating the jazz context of Loomis' music, and looked both in the singing of textual episodes and in the technique of scat. I don’t know if Lumis and his vocalists thought about it, but when listening to Job’s Trials, I immediately remembered Gail Moran’s vocals in Chick Koria’s long-time plot project The Mad Hatter based on “Alice in Wonderland”: I think that’s a lot in common.
Well, a few words about the author of this unusual project. Dan Loomis, an experienced and sophisticated jazz bass player, also works with his own quartet and bands The Wee Trio and Spoke. For him, this is the third solo project, moreover, after a ten-year break. When working on Job’s Trials, Lumisu was supported by New York's largest Catholic church, St. Peter's Basilica. Dan also has another work in the genre of "jazz oratorio", already dedicated to the Passion of Christ. I hope to wait for its publication.
