Brooklyn Summer Bass Intensive

A one-week day camp for serious middle and high school students who want to go deep on their instrument before the school year begins.

The bass is the foundation of almost every genre of music — rock, jazz, funk, soul, Latin, blues, and orchestral — but most young players rarely get to explore all of it in one place, or with the focused attention the instrument deserves. That's exactly what this program is designed to do.

Mornings are focused on skill-building; afternoons shift to ensemble playing and enrichment. Students will leave the week with stronger technique, a broader musical vocabulary, and a deeper understanding of what the bass can do.

Tuition & Details

Tuition is offered on a sliding scale to ensure the program is accessible to all motivated students. Participants are invited to select the tier that best reflects their current circumstances — no explanation needed.

  • Equity Rate:$400 — For those who need financial flexibility to participate 

  • Program Rate: $575— The standard tuition that reflects the full cost of instruction 

  • Patron Rate: $800 — For those who wish to invest in the program and support a fellow student's access

Over five days, students will:

  • Learn iconic bass lines from across genres, studying them by ear and playing them together as a group

  • Build and refine core technique — scales, arpeggios, fingering principles, long tones, bow hold and pizzicato sound

  • Learn to walk a jazz bass line and improvise over the blues

  • Work through classical orchestral excerpts and solos

  • Explore music theory through the lens of the bass — chord tones, counterpoint, and how to read a lead sheet

  • Play in ensemble settings, including duets and small groups, and learn how bass fits alongside keyboard and drum parts

  • Study the history of the instrument through video and discussion of the great bassists

Students should bring their own upright or electric bass and a music notebook. Lunch and snacks are not provided.
